Second excerpt (Memento Mori - Remember you must die)

“Tell me about the nightmares.” Dr. Raimer, the occupational health psychologist, rested his chin on his hands, as he waited patiently for her answer.
Yvonne sighed. She resented being here. This was the second of the psych sessions she had agreed to, in order to be allowed back to work. She felt that she'd worked through the traumatic experience of the sadist, herself, and didn't need help from others, but it was true that she was suffering terrifying nightmares.
“Any involving the sadist?” Raimer prompted gently.
She shook her head, “no.” Her gaze moved to the window behind Raimer, it was raining hard. Her eyes glazed over, hazing the streaks, which were running down the glass, “I dream of tornadoes a lot.”
            “Tornadoes?”
“Big, black clouds approaching me. They're spinning, developing spirals, which reach for the ground. I know they are coming for me and the people I care about.”
            “Do you wake up then?”
            “Sometimes.”
“What happens when you don't wake up.”
“They take me up, or if I'm driving, they lift the car.”
            “Do you feel afraid?”
“The strange thing is that, at first, I almost like it. I'm flying and I can see a long way. I can see everything.”
            “And then?”
“I'm too high up. Far, far too high. I know that when the tornado has finished with me, I'm going to fall a very long way...I'm going to die.”
“You mentioned the tornadoes coming for people you care about.”
“Yes, sometimes I'm not the one under threat. I know it's coming for my family, or friends, and I am frantic, trying to get them to go to safety. I'm running to warn them. Those are the most terrifying nightmares.”
            “What about frequency?”
Yvonne looked back at the psychologist, “frequency?”
“Are the nightmares becoming less frequent?”
“No...I don't know...I was having nightmares long before the sadist.”
           “After David?”
Yvonne's eyes became shiny, betraying the tears only barely held back.
           “Yes.” She swallowed hard.
“You've been on your own for quite a while now. It's not a bad thing, you know, to reach out to others. Do you think you may have been closing yourself off?”
          “Yes...no...I don't know, maybe.”
“And now you have a new case. A new killer.”
          “Yes.”
“Are you really ready for that?”
Yvonne snorted, “oh don't worry, doctor, I'm being given the kid gloves treatment.” Her brow was furrowed and her breathing slow.
         “DCI Matthews?”
         “He's watching my every move.”
         “You can understand why...”
Yvonne was feeling raw. She was glad the session would soon be at a close. Raimer could see into her and she found the whole experience uncomfortable. He was always too close to the mark. She nodded and glanced at the clock, her signal to him that she wanted the session to end.
“I'd like to see you again in 3 weeks.” His voice was firm.
“Yes, doctor.” She said the words softly, but had no intention of following through.

Coming soon.... Memento Mori (Remember you will die)

Here is the first taster of my new novel   Memento Mori  (Remember you will die)

Due out later this year..

'Thwip', he barely had time to notice the powdered stone kicked up from the old church wall before, 'thwip', the second bullet fractured his jaw on the way into his throat and out the other side of his neck. Shocked, choking on his own blood, he could feel his lungs collapsing in on themselves, fighting to expand - desperate for air. He looked to his left in the direction of where the bullet had come, just before falling, like a controlled explosion, to the ground.
Footsteps. Fast footsteps. Footsteps running to where his body lay heaving, consciousness slipping away. He tried crying out “why?”, but nothing worked anymore. He was aware of the sun - high, searing, blinding and the pain with each spasm. A vague shape with a blade. A blade slashing at his clothing. The vague shape cutting at his chest. Then nothing.       '

What people have been saying about "Death Master"

Death Master has been in the top 100 best selling kindle thrillers on Amazon.co.uk now for 1 week. The comments coming into me by email, on forums and via facebook have really put a smile on my face. Here are some examples:

"...enjoyed it very much!! I'd rate it up there with my beloved James Patterson. :-) It was very suspenseful and I didn't want to put it down...."

"...of all the books I have ever read, Death Master is up there with best of them. It is a superbly crafted work, with the horror and suspence of the best Stephen King novels and the imagery of a blockbuster movie. I have enjoyed it from the first page...it's still sizzling....."

"...what an exciting read, havent done any housework or cooking since i started it. couldnt guess who the killer was, though i tried to with every new turn.

Writing when it's raining...

There is something very satisfying, when you know (and can hear) that it's raining hard outside, and you are sitting with a mug of steaming coffee and writing.  You're not missing anything happening in the sun; you don't have to feel guilt that you're not gardening (because you you couldn't do it in the rain anyway) and shopping would just get soggy...
'Memento Mori' will not write itself, so I must get on. I'm researching the Mabinogion (Welsh, Celtic legends) - fascinating.

My first week in Paperback

Well, this has been Death Master 's first week in Paperback and today has seen the paperback edition's rank reach 38,599 out of over 8,000,000 books !  A VERY decent start :) .  Meanwhile, book 2 continues to develop and I'm really enjoying the ideas buzzing in my brain.  Tomorrow I'm taking a ride out in the car to Tintern Abbey ruins, a place important in the next scene, so that I can soak in the atmosphere, write notes and take pictures. That's all part of the fun of writing !

Writing two books????

Not satisfied with writing my second thriller 'Memento Mori' (Remember you will die), my brain, for reasons unbeknown to myself, is firing off ideas for my third thriller 'Total Wipeout'.  Must be the unseasonably (but very welcome) warm weather we are having here in the UK, in March, giving me inspiration !   I have given myself the deadline of November to complete 'Memento Mori' so will be writing around 1000-2000 words each day (in theory) until it's ready for editing.

Did you know.... there is a church in Chester with an unfinished wing. The wing looks like a ruin but if you loook up, you will see a painted black coffin set high in the wall - a grim reminder to medieval congregations of their mortality...

Top 5000 and climbing?

Well today saw the Kindle version of  DEATH MASTER hit the top 5000 in UK (out of around 400,000 kindle books)  :-).  Ultimate goal would be to achieve top 100 if possible.. well I can dream ..

Today I spent some time in the garden, taking in the views and developing my plot lines for book 2 : 'Memento Mori'.   The scenery here is great for writing and my imagination just doesn't stop right now. It's like the characters are creating the book themselves and demanding that they be committed to the page...and they are very impatient !!   I am so looking forward to the summer when I hope to have long writing weekends in the sun.  I am hoping my final proof will arrive tomorrow for the paperback version and this should then be available this week.
